Becoming A Chef
So you're thinking about becoming a chef. Well, lucky for you everyone in the world loves food. There is, nonetheless a difference between eating homemade food and the food that you will get in a five star restaurant or any other high caliber dining establishment. The main difference between homemade and restaurant food will be the cook. As for homemade food, the householder is the creator of any meals that you will eat. In a restaurant it is a chef who prepares those meals. For anyone who aspires to become a chef there are certain educational goals and requirements that must be fulfilled.
First off, the aspiring chef must be prepared to spend long hours, any time of the day or night, standing on their feet. Secondly, the aspiring chef must dress a certain way. The main item in a chef's apparel will be of course shoes. As chefs need to be constantly moving from one area of the kitchen to the other while they create their masterpieces. Wearing a very comfortable yet slip resistant pair of shoes is a must.
Then of course there's the apron. Now these aprons are not like your typical housewife apron. The main color of a chef's apron will be white. The ties are long enough to go around the chef's waist and be tied in the front of the body. This tie arrangement makes a suitable place to hang a hand wiping cloth. A couple of other very important items in the chef's apparel range is the chef's hat and a pair of well fitting chef pants. One last but optional item is a smart looking chef's coat as part of their chef apparel as they may need to look well dressed in front of the clients. A great many of these chef coats are long sleeved yet there are a few short sleeved chef coats that can be bought.
If the apparel hasn't scared you away and you still desire to become a chef the main element that is needed is hands-on experience. This experience conjugated with a training in the culinary arts is likely to give you an opening in the cuisine business. You should gain this experience as early as possible, maybe by working in a restaurant while you are in high school. Or better yet, becoming a weekend chef for your family and friends. This project would give you a great head start prior to joining a first class culinary school.
Working in a restaurant, even if you are not cooking food, will give you the opportunity to maintain and understand what is needed for the preparation of meals for a large number of people. From this starting point you can decide whether you want to become a chef or decide if you will become disappointed after a couple of years of cooking food for faceless people who will never know that you made their meals. This is why I personally enjoy becoming a weekend chef every chance I get for my family and friends.
If you decide that this can be a profession that you would enjoy, as an educational setting you should see if there are any first-class culinary schools that you can enroll in. Here you will be given the basics of cuisine. In any case learning how to prepare and cook food, you will also sustain instruction in presenting the food to the client artistically. Be aware that this preliminary educational training period can last for about four years.
At this point you should hopefully have some real experience in a restaurant in addition to your culinary Department of Education to apply for a situation in the hospitality trade. While you are working here for the first time you will first be granted tasks like peeling and carving various vegetables and meats. In addition you may have the task of washing the plates, pans and other utensils that is needful for the preparation of meals. These tasks, while you might consider them menial, are in fact the grounding upon which you will become a chef.
After you have spent some years learning the ropes you can move on to the genuine business of becoming a chef. The main thing that you must remember is that to become a chef takes perseverance, hard work, and a little luck.
